Kolloidimyllyjä

Kolloidimyllyjä, often translated as colloid mills, are specialized types of milling equipment designed to reduce particle size and homogenize materials in a liquid suspension. They are particularly effective at creating fine dispersions and emulsions, often achieving particle sizes in the micrometer or even sub-micrometer range. The fundamental principle behind their operation involves a high-speed rotor and a stationary stator, or two rotors operating in close proximity. The gap between these components is typically very small and adjustable, allowing for precise control over the particle size reduction.

As the material is fed into the colloid mill, it is subjected to intense shear forces, turbulence, and cavitation. The rotor spins at high speeds, creating a powerful flow that forces the material through the narrow clearance between the rotor and stator. This process breaks down larger particles, mixes different components thoroughly, and creates a stable emulsion or suspension. The design can vary, with some mills featuring grooved or toothed surfaces on the rotor and stator to enhance the grinding and shearing action.
