Kolhydratforbindelser, commonly known as carbohydrates, are a fundamental class of organic compounds essential for life. Their name derives from the chemical composition, generally consisting of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms, often in a ratio of 1:2:1. Carbohydrates serve as a primary source of energy for living organisms, from simple sugars to complex polysaccharides.

The simplest form of carbohydrate is a monosaccharide, such as glucose, which is the main sugar found in blood and a primary fuel source for cells. Disaccharides are formed when two monosaccharides are linked together, with common examples including sucrose (table sugar) and lactose (milk sugar).
