Kokonaisäänieristys, often translated as total soundproofing or complete sound insulation, refers to a building's ability to prevent sound from entering or escaping. This is achieved through a combination of materials and construction techniques designed to block airborne sound, impact sound, and flanking transmission. Achieving true "total" soundproofing is a complex and often expensive endeavor, with complete isolation usually being an ideal rather than a fully realized state in typical residential or commercial construction. The goal is to significantly reduce the transmission of sound to a level that is imperceptible or acceptable for the intended use of the space.

Effective sound insulation relies on several principles. Mass is a key factor; heavier, denser materials are better at blocking sound waves. Air gaps and seals are also crucial. Sound can travel through even small cracks, so meticulous sealing of all openings, such as around doors, windows, and ventilation systems, is essential. Damping, the process of reducing vibrations, is another important element. This can be achieved using materials that absorb vibrational energy, such as specialized insulation or damping compounds. Finally, decoupling, which involves separating structural elements so they cannot easily transmit vibrations, plays a significant role in preventing sound from traveling through the building's structure.
