Kohlequellen

Kohlequellen, or coal sources, refer to the locations or deposits where coal is extracted. Coal is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock, formed from ancient vegetation that has been subjected to high pressure and heat over millions of years. It is primarily composed of carbon, along with variable quantities of other elements, notably hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen.

Coal is classified into four main types based on its carbon content and age: anthracite, bituminous, sub-bituminous, and lignite. Each type has distinct properties and is used for different purposes. Anthracite, the highest rank of coal, has the highest carbon content and is used primarily for residential heating. Bituminous coal is the most common type used for electricity generation. Sub-bituminous and lignite, the lowest ranks, are used for electricity generation and industrial processes.

Coal is extracted through two main methods: surface mining and underground mining. Surface mining involves removing the soil and rock above the coal seam, while underground mining involves creating tunnels and shafts to access the coal below the surface. The choice of mining method depends on factors such as the depth of the coal seam, the geology of the area, and the economic feasibility.

Coal is a significant source of energy, accounting for approximately 27% of the world's primary energy consumption. However, it is also a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. As a result, there is a growing global effort to transition away from coal towards cleaner energy sources. Despite this, coal remains an important energy resource in many parts of the world, particularly in countries with large coal reserves and limited access to other energy sources.
