Kogumas

Kogumas are a traditional type of handwoven textile originating from the Koguryo Kingdom (Goguryeo), an ancient Korean state that existed from the 1st century BCE to the 7th century CE. These textiles were highly valued for their craftsmanship, durability, and cultural significance, often used as ceremonial garments, burial goods, or trade commodities.

Kogumas were typically woven from natural fibers such as hemp, flax, or silk, with intricate patterns and designs that reflected the artistic traditions of the time. Common motifs included geometric shapes, floral patterns, and stylized animal figures, often symbolizing prosperity, protection, or spiritual beliefs. The weaving techniques involved complex dyeing processes, using plant-based pigments to achieve vibrant colors like red, blue, and yellow.

Archaeological discoveries, particularly from burial sites in northern Korea and southern Manchuria, have provided valuable insights into kogumas. Many well-preserved examples have been unearthed, showcasing the advanced textile production of the Koguryo Kingdom. These artifacts are now housed in museums, including the National Museum of Korea and the Palace Museum in Beijing, where they serve as important cultural heritage pieces.

Kogumas were not only functional but also carried symbolic weight, often accompanying the deceased in tombs as offerings to the afterlife. Their production and use declined after the fall of the Koguryo Kingdom, though their legacy endured in later Korean textile traditions. Today, kogumas remain a subject of scholarly study, offering a glimpse into the artistic and cultural achievements of one of Korea’s most influential historical periods.
