Knooppuntembeddings

Knooppuntembeddings, also known as node embeddings, are a technique used in machine learning and graph theory to represent nodes in a graph as low-dimensional vectors. These vectors capture the structural and semantic properties of the nodes within the graph. The goal is to learn an embedding space where nodes that are similar in the graph are also close to each other in the vector space.

This transformation is crucial because many machine learning algorithms are designed to work with fixed-size vector inputs, and raw graph structures are not directly compatible. Knooppuntembeddings provide a way to feed graph data into these algorithms for tasks such as node classification, link prediction, and community detection.

Several methods exist for generating node embeddings. Popular approaches include matrix factorization techniques applied to graph adjacency matrices, random walk-based methods like Node2Vec and DeepWalk, and graph neural networks (GNNs). Each method leverages different aspects of the graph structure, such as neighborhood information, path occurrences, or message passing between nodes.

The quality of a node embedding is often evaluated by how well it performs on downstream tasks. A good embedding should preserve important graph properties, allowing machine learning models to generalize effectively. The dimensionality of the embedding vector is a hyperparameter that needs to be tuned, balancing expressiveness with computational efficiency.
