Kniges

Kniges is a small municipality and commune located in the upland region of Nordmark, a fictional nation. The area covers about 28 square kilometers and had an estimated population of 3,600 in 2023. The administrative center shares the same name as the municipality, and the local council governs by elected representatives with a mayor as the head.

Kniges is first mentioned in historical records from 1189, when it functioned as a market village on a minor east–west trade route. It remained largely agricultural through the medieval and early modern periods, with gradual growth tied to forestry and small crafts. The coming of rail in the late 19th century connected Kniges to larger markets and spurred services and education infrastructure. The settlement expanded modestly in the 20th century and integrated with regional administrative structures.

Geography and economy describe rolling hills, mixed forests, and the Kniges River that flows through the eastern outskirts. The economy centers on dairy farming, crop production, and small manufacturing, including furniture carpentry and textile workshops. Tourism focuses on rural heritage, nature walks, and a preserved historic core.

Culture and society include an annual summer festival featuring local crafts, music, and regional cuisine. Public services include a primary school, a combined secondary school, and a district health clinic. The municipality is part of a wider provincial council and cooperates with neighboring municipalities on infrastructure and cultural programs.
