Klärtechnologie

Klärtechnologie, also known as wastewater treatment technology, refers to the processes and equipment used to remove pollutants from domestic and industrial wastewater before it is discharged into the environment. The primary goal is to protect public health and the aquatic ecosystem.

Wastewater treatment typically involves several stages. The preliminary stage often includes screening to remove large debris like rags, grit, and sand. This is followed by primary treatment, where wastewater settles in large tanks, allowing suspended solids to sink to the bottom as sludge and lighter materials to float to the surface.

The secondary treatment stage focuses on removing dissolved and suspended organic matter. This is commonly achieved through biological processes, where microorganisms consume the pollutants. Common methods include activated sludge processes, where wastewater is aerated to encourage microbial growth, or trickling filters, where wastewater flows over media coated with microorganisms.

Tertiary treatment, or advanced treatment, is employed when higher levels of purification are required. This can involve disinfection to kill remaining pathogens using methods like chlorination or UV radiation, nutrient removal to prevent eutrophication of receiving waters, and filtration to remove fine suspended solids.

Industrial wastewater may require specialized treatment depending on the specific contaminants present. Technologies like chemical precipitation, ion exchange, and membrane filtration are used to remove heavy metals, specific organic compounds, or dissolved salts. Sludge generated during the treatment process also requires further management, often involving dewatering, digestion, and disposal or reuse.
