Kluver-Bucy syndrome is a rare neurological disorder characterized by a distinct set of behavioral and cognitive changes. It is typically caused by bilateral damage to the temporal lobes of the brain, particularly the amygdala. This damage can result from various factors including stroke, trauma, infection, or neurodegenerative diseases.

The hallmark symptoms of Kluver-Bucy syndrome include hypersexuality, often manifesting as inappropriate sexual behaviors. Another prominent feature is oral fixation, where individuals tend to place objects in their mouths, regardless of their edibility. There is also a significant reduction in fear and aggression, leading to uncharacteristic tameness and a lack of response to stimuli that would normally provoke fear. Cognitive deficits are also common, such as visual agnosia, the inability to recognize familiar objects, and hypermetamorphosis, a compulsive need to attend to and investigate every visual stimulus. Memory impairment, especially short-term memory, can also be present.

Diagnosis is usually made based on the characteristic behavioral changes and is often confirmed with neuroimaging techniques like MRI or CT scans that reveal damage to the temporal lobes. Treatment focuses on managing the symptoms, which can be challenging. Antidepressants or anxiolytics may be used to address emotional lability, while behavioral therapies aim to modify problematic behaviors. The prognosis varies depending on the underlying cause and the extent of brain damage.
