Klipsausmenetelmät, or clipping methods, refer to a set of techniques used in computer graphics and geometric modeling to remove or modify parts of a geometric object that lie outside a specified region or boundary. These methods are crucial for rendering scenes efficiently, as they allow the system to discard information that will not be visible to the viewer.

A common application of clipping is in the rendering pipeline, where objects are clipped against the view frustum, a pyramid-shaped volume that defines the visible portion of the 3D scene. Polygons that lie partially or entirely outside the view frustum are then clipped so that only the visible fragments are processed further.

There are various algorithms for clipping, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. For lines, the Cohen-Sutherland algorithm and the Liang-Barsky algorithm are widely used. The Cohen-Sutherland algorithm divides the clipping window into nine regions and uses outcodes to quickly determine trivial accepts or rejects. The Liang-Barsky algorithm is generally more efficient, especially for clipping against rectangular windows, as it uses parametric line equations.

For polygons, the Sutherland-Hodgman algorithm is a popular choice. It iteratively clips the polygon against each edge of the clipping window, producing a new polygon after each clipping operation. Another approach is the Weiler-Atherton algorithm, which can handle concave polygons and polygons with holes, but is more complex.

Clipping methods are fundamental to creating 2D and 3D images, ensuring that only the relevant geometry is rendered and contributing to improved performance in graphics applications.
