Klimagassinventar

Klimagassinventar, which translates to "greenhouse gas inventory" in English, is a systematic accounting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals from a specific area, such as a country, region, or even a company, over a defined period, typically a year. These inventories are crucial for understanding a nation's or entity's contribution to climate change and for developing effective climate mitigation strategies.

The process involves identifying all relevant sources of greenhouse gas emissions, including those from energy production and consumption, industrial processes, agriculture, land use changes, and waste management. Removals, such as those from forests and other natural carbon sinks, are also accounted for. Different greenhouse gases are considered, with carbon dioxide (CO2) being the most prominent, but also including methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and fluorinated gases.

Data for these inventories are collected from various sources, including government statistics, industry reports, scientific surveys, and modeling. Methodologies for calculating emissions are standardized internationally, often following guidelines developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), to ensure comparability and accuracy.

Klimagassinventare serve multiple purposes. They are essential for reporting progress towards international climate commitments, such as those under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
