Klimabewegungen, also known as climate movements, are social and political movements that aim to address the global climate crisis through public advocacy, protest, and policy change. Emerging prominently in the early 21st century, these movements emphasize the urgency of reducing greenhouse‑gas emissions, transitioning to renewable energy, and protecting vulnerable ecosystems. They often mobilize citizens through organized demonstrations, online campaigns, and educational outreach, seeking to influence national and international climate agreements such as the Paris Agreement.

Prominent examples include Fridays for Future, launched by Greta Thunberg in 2018, which coordinated global school strikes for climate action. Climate Strike, another large annual event, gathers millions of participants in cities worldwide to call for stronger governmental commitments. Extinction Rebellion, founded in the United Kingdom in 2018, adopts non‑violent direct action tactics, such as blocking traffic and occupying public spaces, to demand legally binding emissions targets. The Indigenous Peoples’ Climate Movement and various grassroots coalitions bring diverse voices to the discussion, emphasizing that climate justice intersects with social and economic equity.

While Klimabewegungen have succeeded in raising public awareness, influencing media coverage, and prompting policy debates, they also face criticism for occasionally overlooking scientific nuance or alienating certain political groups. Critics argue that some protests may disrupt economic stability or that demands for rapid policy shifts could be unfeasible for less resilient economies. Nevertheless, the movements have contributed to heightened political pressure, shaped national climate legislation, and fostered international cooperation among civil society, ultimately reinforcing the global urgency to mitigate climate change.
