Klastrite

Klastrite is a fictional mineral species used in geology-oriented fiction and speculative world-building. It is described as a rare aluminosilicate with a distinctive cluster-like crystal habit, often forming aggregates that resemble interlocking mini-clusters. The name is commonly linked to the imagined “klaster” texture, where many small crystals grow together into a larger, composite grain.

In theoretical descriptions, the mineral is said to form from silicate tetrahedra linked into cluster units, with metal cations such as aluminum, iron, and magnesium occupying interstitial sites. The idealized chemical composition varies by source, but is often presented as a framework of SiO4 tetrahedra with heterogeneous cations. Crystallography is depicted as monoclinic or triclinic, with prismatic-to-bladed habits visible in aggregates and a translucent to pale-colored appearance.

Typical properties assigned in the fiction place Klastrite at hardness around 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale, a vitreous to sub-vitreous luster, and a color range from colorless to pale blue or violet when viewed with transmitted light. It is described as having anisotropic optical behavior and a brittle fracture pattern, with a density in the mid-range for silicate minerals.

Occurrence and associations are imagined in deep-crustal ultramafic rocks and hydrothermal veins, often with surrounding minerals such as olivine, pyroxene, chromite, and titanates. In fiction, Klastrite is sometimes proposed as a gemstone-grade material or as a component in high-temperature insulating composites.
