Klassenverband

Klassenverband is a German term that literally means class association or class organization. In sociological and political theory it denotes the organized unity of a social class and the ways in which that class acts as a political and social actor within society. The concept is often used in Marxist and neo-Marxist discourse to describe how a class can coordinate its interests through collective structures.

The term encompasses formal organizations—such as labor unions, political parties, worker councils, and other associations—as well as a more diffuse alignment among individuals sharing a social position. A Klassenverband implies some degree of coordination, shared identity, and common aims, even if the level of formal organization varies.

Klassenverband is usually discussed in relation to surrounding concepts such as Klassenbewusstsein (class consciousness) and Klassenkampf (class struggle). It focuses on organizational capacity and collective action rather than solely on awareness or conflict, though in practice these dimensions are interrelated.

Historically, the concept appears in 19th- and 20th-century German political and sociological writings as a way to analyze the potential for class-based politics and solidarity across trades and occupations within the working class. In contemporary discourse the term is less common, with scholars more frequently using terms like class structure, class mobilization, or class forces. In some contexts, the word may also describe the class as a social unit within educational settings, i.e., the cohort of students forming a class.
