Klassenformeln

Klassenformeln are a concept in algebraic number theory, specifically related to quadratic fields. A quadratic field is a number field of degree 2 over the rational numbers, typically of the form Q(sqrt(d)) where d is a square-free integer. The ring of integers of such a field, denoted by O_K, plays a crucial role in understanding its arithmetic properties.

Klassenformeln, which translates to "class formulas," are explicit formulas that relate certain arithmetic invariants of a quadratic field to analytic invariants. The most prominent example is the analytic class number formula. This formula connects the class number of a quadratic field (which is an arithmetic invariant measuring the number of distinct ideal classes in its ring of integers) to a value of a zeta function or an L-function associated with the field.

Specifically, for a quadratic field K, the analytic class number formula states that the residue of the Dedekind zeta function of K at s=1 is proportional to the class number, the regulator of the field, and the number of roots of unity in the field. The regulator is an analytic invariant related to the fundamental units of the field. These formulas provide a bridge between the algebraic structure of the ring of integers and the analytic behavior of related zeta functions. They are powerful tools for studying the structure of ideal class groups and for computing class numbers, especially for real quadratic fields.
