The term derives from Latin classificare, meaning to sort or arrange. Classification systems aim to create order, facilitate retrieval, and support analysis by describing patterns and relationships among objects, concepts, or data.

Klasifikimet appear across many domains. In biology, taxonomic classification arranges living organisms into hierarchical ranks such as domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. In libraries and information management, bibliographic classification systems organize literature for easy access, using schemes like the Dewey Decimal System or the Library of Congress Classification. In data handling and computer science, data classification assigns items to categories such as domain, sensitivity, or topic. In machine learning, supervised classification maps input data to predefined labels, enabling tasks like spam detection or image recognition.

Effective classifications are clear, internally consistent, reproducible, and fit for the intended purpose.
