Klapbehandlinger

Klapbehandlinger is a term used in some Scandinavian languages to denote medical treatments for gonorrhea, commonly referred to in English as “the clap.” The infection is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae and is transmitted through sexual contact. Many infections are asymptomatic, but when symptoms occur they can include urethral or vaginal discharge, pain on urination, or pharyngeal and rectal involvement in exposed sites. Effective klapbehandlinger combine antibiotic therapy with diagnostic testing and public health measures.

Historically, gonorrhea was treated with penicillin or tetracyclines, but widespread resistance emerged, rendering many older drugs ineffective. Quinoline resistance also reduced the utility of earlier options. From the late 20th century onward, treatment regimens shifted toward extended-spectrum cephalosporins, with ceftriaxone becoming a mainstay in many guidelines. In regions where chlamydia coinfection is common or not excluded, additional antibiotics may be used to cover potential co-infection.

Diagnosis relies on nucleic acid amplification testing from affected sites, such as urethral, cervical, pharyngeal, or rectal swabs. Culture and susceptibility testing can aid in resistance surveillance and guide therapy in resistant cases. Patients should abstain from sex until treatment is completed and symptoms resolve, and partners should be notified and treated to prevent reinfection.

Prevention emphasizes consistent condom use and routine screening for high‑risk groups. There is currently no widely available vaccine for gonorrhea, and rising antimicrobial resistance underscores the importance of adherence to clinical guidelines, surveillance, and timely partner management.
