Kjøretøyregisteret

Kjøretøyregisteret is the central national register for motor vehicles and trailers in Norway, maintained by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen). It serves as the authoritative source for information about registered vehicles, their technical attributes, and the persons or entities that own them. The register supports national administration of vehicle registration, casting, and related services, and it interfaces with other public registers and authorities as needed.

The register contains data such as registration number (license plate), Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), make, model, body type, year of manufacture, engine size, fuel type, weight and allowed gross weight, color, and the date of first registration. It also records registration status (active, suspended, deregistered), technical inspection results (EU control), and ownership information, including the name and address of the registered owner. In addition, changes in ownership, changes in vehicle status, and lien or mortgage information are documented.

Purpose and use of the Kjøretøyregisteret include facilitating registration, transfer of ownership, and deregistration processes; supporting road taxation, insurance, and enforcement activities; and providing data for statistics, planning, and research. It also serves as a basis for public and professional checks of vehicle identity and legality.

Access and privacy are governed by applicable Norwegian law and data-protection regulations. Access is restricted to authorized public authorities and entities such as police, tax authorities, and insurers; individuals can obtain information about their own vehicles under defined procedures. Data quality and corrections are handled through established processes within Statens vegvesen and related agencies.
