Kittpistoler

Kittpistoler is a Swedish term for a type of partisan warfare tactics utilized during the 18th and 19th centuries. The term is often referred to in the context of the Finnish-Swedish wars, as well as the Napoleonic Wars.

Partisans employed by both Swedish and Finnish forces during this time utilized guerrilla warfare tactics, such as ambushes, sabotage, and raids on supply lines. These tactics were often carried out by small, mobile groups of soldiers, or irregulars, who operated deep within enemy territory. Their goal was to weaken the enemy's resolve and disrupt their operations through harassment and disruption of logistics.

The term Kittpistoler specifically refers to the Swedish forces that utilized these tactics against the Russian forces during the Finnish War (1808-1809). Partisan units, usually consisting of Finnish and Swedish soldiers, were organized and operated in secret, often receiving support from local populations.

The Kittpistoler operations often received support from the Swedish government and military command, though their status within the official Swedish military structure remained ambiguous. The use of these tactics ultimately contributed to weakening the Russian presence in Finland and negotiating the Treaty of Fredrikshamn, which brought an end to the Finnish War.
