Kitkatasoja

Kitkatasoja is a concept in tribology that denotes discrete, stable levels of friction at the interface between two contacting surfaces. In many experiments, the measured friction coefficient does not change smoothly with loading or speed but instead settles into a small number of plateaus, each representing a distinct friction state.

The term is of Finnish origin, derived from kitka (friction) and taso (level or plane). It is used primarily in Finnish-language technical literature to describe these observable friction states and the transitions between them.

Several mechanisms can establish and sustain kitkatasoja. Transitions between lubrication regimes (for example, from boundary to mixed to hydrodynamic) alter the real contact area and film thickness. Surface microstructure, wear debris, temperature, and phase changes in coatings can also create stable plateaus and abrupt shifts that define different friction levels.

Understanding kitkatasoja aids in predicting wear and energy loss, guiding lubricant selection and surface engineering. It is relevant for precision devices such as MEMS, robotic joints, and braking systems, where reliable friction states improve control and longevity.
