Kitkakerrosten

Kitkakerrosten are thin films that form at the contact interface between sliding surfaces, composed of material transfer, oxide or alloy layers, lubricants, and wear debris. In tribology, the term refers to the friction layer that mediates interaction during motion and can significantly influence the coefficient of friction and wear behavior.

The formation of kitkakerrosten occurs through several mechanisms, including material transfer from one surface to another, chemical reactions and oxidation in the contact zone, and the accumulation of lubricants or contaminants. The resulting layer can be a transient boundary film or a more stable transfer or third-body layer that remains attached during sliding.
