Kirjoitustavan, or writing style, is the set of conventions used to render a language in written form. It encompasses the script or alphabet, spelling rules, punctuation, capitalization, diacritics, hyphenation, and other typographic norms. It is distinct from pronunciation, grammar, or vocabulary, and it determines how spoken language is transcribed into text.

A writing system includes not only the characters used but also the standard way those characters map to sounds, how words are divided and connected, and how texts are laid out on the page. Writing standards are often maintained or formalized by language authorities and may evolve over time through reforms or revisions. Historical variations show how a language’s written form can diverge from earlier practices while remaining mutually intelligible.

In Finnish context, standard orthography is maintained by Kotimaisten kielten keskus (Kotus). Modern Finnish orthography uses the Latin alphabet with diacritics such as ä and ö, and relies on relatively phonemic spelling. Rules cover capitalization, sentence punctuation, the treatment of compound words, and the handling of loanwords. Orthographic reforms have occurred over the past century, reflecting shifts in pronunciation, education, and technology.

Beyond national standards, kirjoitustavan is a general term used in linguistics and language technology to compare writing systems across languages, or to refer to a particular style guide within academic or editorial practice.
