Kirjapainotyö refers to the historical craft and industry of printing books and other printed materials. This practice was central to the dissemination of knowledge and culture for centuries, preceding modern digital publishing. The process involved several key stages, starting with typesetting, where individual metal letters (type) were arranged to form words, lines, and pages. This was a labor-intensive task requiring great skill and precision.

Once the type was set and locked into a frame called a forme, the printing press was used to transfer ink from the type to paper. Early printing presses, like Gutenberg's, were mechanical devices that applied pressure to ensure a clear impression. Ink was typically made from lampblack and linseed oil, a process that also required careful preparation. After printing, the pages were bound together to form books.

The development of kirjapainotyö revolutionized society by making books more accessible and affordable. It facilitated the spread of literacy, religious texts, scientific discoveries, and political ideas. Major advancements in printing technology, such as the invention of the steam-powered press and later rotary presses, significantly increased the speed and volume of production.
