Kipinäsytytysprosessi, often translated as spark ignition process, is the fundamental mechanism by which an internal combustion engine starts its combustion cycle. This process begins with the intake stroke where a mixture of fuel and air is drawn into the cylinder. During the compression stroke, this mixture is compressed, increasing its temperature and pressure.

At the precise moment of ignition, the spark plug discharges an electrical spark across its electrodes. This spark provides the necessary activation energy to initiate the combustion of the compressed fuel-air mixture. The spark's high temperature causes the surrounding fuel molecules to break down and react with oxygen, leading to a rapid flame front propagation.

This flame front spreads outwards, consuming the remaining fuel-air mixture within the cylinder. The resulting rapid expansion of gases from the combustion process generates high pressure, which then pushes the piston downwards during the power stroke. This downward movement of the piston is what ultimately drives the crankshaft and produces the engine's power.
