Kinnauri

Kinnauri refers to the language spoken by the Kinnauri people of the Kinnaur district in Himachal Pradesh, northern India, and to the ethnic group itself. It is one of the Himalayan languages native to the region and serves as a community language in daily life, culture, and local interactions.

Linguistic classification varies among researchers. Most classify Kinnauri as a Tibeto-Burman language within the Sino-Tibetan family, though some proposals place it within the Western Pahari group. The language is understood to comprise multiple regional varieties or dialects, each with distinct phonological and lexical features.

Geographic distribution and dialects: Kinnauri is spoken primarily in the central and eastern parts of Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district, with pockets in neighboring districts. Dialectal differences exist between valleys and communities, sometimes limiting mutual intelligibility between speaker groups.

Scripts and literature: Historically, Kinnauri has been written in the Takri script. In modern contexts, Devanagari is widely used for education and printed material. A modest body of descriptive work, including grammars, dictionaries, and collections of oral literature, has been developed through academic projects and local cultural initiatives.

Status and preservation: Kinnauri is a minority language that persists in intergenerational use in several communities, but it faces language shift toward Hindi and other dominant languages in the region.
