Kindergelds

Kindergeld refers to the German monthly child benefit program designed to support families with the costs of raising children. It is administered by the Familienkasse, part of the Federal Employment Agency, on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth. The benefit is generally paid to the parent or guardian who has primary custody and responsibility for the child’s financial support, and it is paid per eligible child.

Eligibility usually requires residence in Germany for the applicant and the child, though citizens of the EU/EEA and some other residents may qualify under specific rules. The child typically must reside in Germany, be under eighteen, or up to twenty-five if they are in school, vocational training, apprenticeship, or higher education with sufficient activity. Disability can extend eligibility beyond the usual limits.

Payments are made monthly and are set by law, with amounts adjusted periodically. The per-child level and any variations by number of children or age are defined in current regulations and should be checked with the Familienkasse or official sources, as figures can change over time.

Kindergeld is separate from the tax system. It is not taxed, while families may also be eligible for the Kinderfreibetrag in their income tax assessment; the tax office compares both options and applies the higher benefit.

Applications are submitted to the Familienkasse, typically with documentation such as proof of identity and the child’s details. Processing times vary.
