Kilpis

Kilpis is a small locality in the Lapland region of Finland, within the municipality of Enontekiö. It lies close to the tripoint of Finland, Sweden, and Norway and is commonly associated with Kilpisjärvi, the nearby lake and village at the heart of the area.

The landscape combines Arctic tundra and boreal forest, with the Saana fell rising nearby. Kilpisjärvi Nature Reserve protects portions of the surroundings. The climate is subarctic, with cold winters and cool summers; the area experiences polar night in winter and the midnight sun in summer.

Historically, the region has Sámi roots and reindeer herding. Today Kilpis serves as a gateway for tourism and scientific research, with facilities catering to visitors and researchers alike; a long-standing research station has operated in the Kilpisjärvi area focusing on Arctic biology and ecology.

The local economy centers on tourism services, outdoor recreation, and cross-border cooperation with Sweden and Norway. Common activities include hiking, northern lights viewing, border-country excursions, and visits to natural attractions such as the lake and nearby mountains.

Kilpis is administratively part of Enontekiö and is known as the northernmost service hub for the region, attracting travelers year-round to experience Arctic Lapland.
