The name combines the metric prefix kilo- with the common mineral suffix -ite, and is used in hypothetical discussions of mineral classification to illustrate how new species might be described and categorized in an encyclopedic voice.

In many accounts, kilobaitide is imagined to originate in hydrothermal veins on distant planetary bodies or in meteorite-derived mineral assemblages associated with exoplanetary geology.
