Kiiminki

Kiiminki is a former municipality in Finland, located in the former province of Oulu and part of the Northern Ostrobothnia region. It was established in 1903. Kiiminki was consolidated with the city of Oulu on January 1, 2013. Before the merger, the municipality had a population of approximately 13,000 people and covered an area of around 3,150 square kilometers, with a significant portion being water. The administrative center of Kiiminki was located in the village of Ylikiiminki.

The area is characterized by vast forests, numerous lakes, and rivers, making it a popular destination for outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, and hiking. The main river flowing through the area is the Oulujoki. Historically, the economy of Kiiminki was based on agriculture and forestry. The municipality also had a growing service sector.

Following the consolidation, the services and administration of Kiiminki were integrated into those of Oulu. The former municipality's territory is now part of Oulu's northern districts. The name "Kiiminki" likely derives from the Finnish word "kiimi," referring to a type of berry or plant, or possibly from a Sámi word. The natural landscape and recreational opportunities continue to be significant features of the former Kiiminki area within Oulu.
