Kiihdytinlaitoksia, known in English as particle accelerators, are scientific instruments used to propel charged subatomic particles to very high speeds and energies. These machines play a crucial role in fundamental physics research, allowing scientists to probe the structure of matter and the forces that govern it. By colliding particles at extremely high energies, researchers can recreate conditions similar to those that existed moments after the Big Bang, leading to the discovery of new particles and phenomena.

There are two main types of particle accelerators: linear accelerators and circular accelerators. Linear accelerators, or linacs, propel particles in a straight line through a series of accelerating structures. Circular accelerators, such as cyclotrons and synchrotrons, use magnetic fields to bend the particle beam into a circular path, allowing them to be accelerated repeatedly over many revolutions. Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is a prominent example of a synchrotron.

Beyond particle physics, accelerators have applications in various fields. They are used in medicine for cancer therapy (radiotherapy), in industry for materials modification and sterilization, and in research for producing isotopes and studying nuclear reactions. The development of particle accelerators has been a continuous process, with each generation of machines becoming larger, more powerful, and more sophisticated, pushing the boundaries of scientific understanding and technological innovation.
