Kiertopesut

Kiertopesut is a traditional type of long-sleeved winter shirt worn in Finland, particularly among working-class people and in rural areas. The name "kiertopesut" translates to " neck- or looped-shirt" in English, which refers to the garment's distinct design feature of a large loop or collar that is tied around the back of the neck.

Kiertopesut typically consists of a long-sleeved, tight-fitting shirt made of thick, insulating wool or polyester. The fabric is usually a dark color such as black, navy blue or dark brown. The garment is designed to be worn over multiple layers of clothing, keeping the wearer warm in harsh winter conditions. The looped collar provides additional warmth and protection from the cold.

Kiertopesut were an essential part of traditional Finnish winter attire, especially among manual laborers such as loggers, lumberjacks, and farmers. The garment's design allowed the wearer to work comfortably in cold conditions, while keeping their head and neck warm. Kiertopesut were often worn under a woolen hat and a scarf to further protect the wearer from the elements.

Although kiertopesut were once a common part of Finnish winter attire, they are less frequently worn today. Modern winter clothing, such as fleeces and thermal tops, has largely replaced traditional garments like the kiertopesut. However, kiertopesut remain a nostalgic reminder of traditional Finnish culture and craftsmanship.
