Kiertohengityksellä, also known as circular breathing, is a breathing technique that allows a continuous sound to be produced without interruption. It is most commonly associated with wind instrument players, particularly those who play instruments like the didgeridoo, bagpipes, and some woodwinds. The technique involves breathing in through the nose while simultaneously expelling air from the cheeks to maintain airflow to the instrument.

To perform circular breathing, the player first takes a deep breath through their nose. While exhaling this stored air, they use their cheeks to create a reservoir of air. By squeezing their cheeks and controlling the airflow with their tongue and lips, they can push this air through the instrument. During this process, the player quickly inhales through their nose, replenishing the air supply before the expelled cheek air runs out. This creates the illusion of a continuous sound, as there is no break in the airflow to the instrument.

Mastering circular breathing requires significant practice and coordination. It involves independent control of the nasal inhalation, cheek compression, and oral exhalation. While it can be challenging to learn, it is an essential technique for musicians who wish to produce sustained tones without pauses for breath. The ability to play continuously can add a unique texture and flow to musical performances, especially in genres that emphasize drone-like sounds or extended melodic lines.
