Keskipistoolit, also known as center-fire cartridges, are a type of self-contained ammunition for firearms. The defining characteristic of a center-fire cartridge is the primer, which is located in the center of the base of the cartridge case. When the firing pin strikes the primer, it ignites a small amount of explosive material, which in turn ignites the main propellant charge within the case. This combustion generates gases that propel the bullet down the barrel. Center-fire cartridges are distinguished from rim-fire cartridges, where the priming compound is contained within a hollow rim at the base of the case.

Center-fire cartridges are widely used in most modern firearms, including rifles, handguns, and some shotguns. They are generally considered more reliable and powerful than rim-fire cartridges, making them suitable for hunting, military applications, and self-defense. The construction of a center-fire cartridge typically includes the bullet, casing, propellant (gunpowder), and primer. The casing is usually made of brass, but can also be steel or other alloys. The primer is a crucial component, providing the initial spark to start the firing sequence. The variety of calibers and power levels available for center-fire cartridges is extensive, catering to a broad range of shooting needs and firearm designs.
