Kerstster

Kerstster, literally "Christmas star" in Dutch, is a term for a star-shaped Christmas decoration used to symbolize the Star of Bethlehem and to decorate homes, churches, and public spaces during the Advent and Christmas season. The concept is common in Dutch-speaking regions, especially the Netherlands and Flanders.

The star iconography traces to the biblical Star of Bethlehem, which, in Christian tradition, guided the Magi to the birthplace of Jesus. In decorative practice, the kerstster embodies light, guidance, and festive welcome. It is used as a top ornament on Christmas trees or as a luminescent feature in windows and interiors.

Forms and materials vary. Traditional kerststerren are made from paper or foil and can be assembled into three-dimensional stars. Modern versions use metal, glass, plastic, or fabric and are often illuminated. Historically some designs employed candles, but contemporary practice typically relies on electric lighting for safety and convenience.

Usage and display tend to be regional and household-specific. A star may crown the Christmas tree, hang in windows, or serve as a freestanding decorative lantern. Public displays, storefronts, and churches frequently feature large illuminated kerststerren during the season, reinforcing the symbol of Christmas light and hospitality.
