Kerststerren, scientifically known as *Poinsettia pulcherrima*, are popular flowering plants often associated with the Christmas season. Native to Mexico, these plants are characterized by their vibrant, colorful bracts, which are often mistaken for petals. The true flowers of the poinsettia are small and yellow, located in the center of the colorful bracts. The most common variety features bright red bracts, but cultivators have developed numerous colors including pink, white, and even marbled patterns.

The history of the poinsettia in the United States is linked to Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico, who introduced the plant to the country in the 1820s. Its association with Christmas grew significantly in the early 20th century, largely due to marketing efforts by the Ecke family, a prominent poinsettia grower. In Mexico, the plant is known as "Flor de Nochebuena," or "Christmas Eve Flower."

Poinsettias thrive in bright, indirect sunlight and prefer temperatures between 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit. They require well-draining soil and should be watered when the top inch of soil feels dry. Overwatering is a common cause of problems for poinsettia owners. Despite a popular myth, poinsettias are not highly toxic, though ingesting large amounts can cause mild stomach upset. Their popularity during the holiday season makes them a ubiquitous decoration in homes and public spaces.
