Kerrostusmenetelmiä, or layering techniques, refers to a diverse set of methods used to deposit thin films or coatings onto a substrate in successive layers. These techniques are fundamental in numerous fields, including semiconductor manufacturing, optics, material science, and decorative finishing. The primary goal of layering is often to impart specific properties to the surface, such as enhanced durability, electrical conductivity, optical transparency, or resistance to corrosion.

Physical vapor deposition (PVD) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) are two broad categories encompassing many specific layering techniques. PVD methods involve the physical transfer of material from a source to the substrate, often through evaporation or sputtering. Examples include sputtering, thermal evaporation, and electron beam evaporation. CVD methods, on the other hand, involve chemical reactions of precursor gases at or near the substrate surface, leading to the deposition of a solid film. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a specialized CVD technique that offers exceptional control over film thickness and conformality by depositing material one atomic layer at a time.

Other layering methods include wet chemical deposition techniques, such as sol-gel processing and electroplating, where materials are deposited from liquid solutions. The choice of layering method depends on factors such as the desired material, film thickness, substrate properties, required purity, deposition rate, and cost considerations. Precise control over layer thickness, uniformity, and adhesion is crucial for the performance of the final product.
