The outer story serves as a framework or setting for the inner story or stories. One of the most famous examples is "The Canterbury Tales" by Geoffrey Chaucer, where a group of pilgrims on a journey to Canterbury Cathedral agree to tell stories to pass the time. The pilgrimage itself forms the outer narrative, while the individual tales told by the pilgrims are the inner stories. Similarly, "One Thousand and One Nights" (also known as "Arabian Nights") uses a kerettörténet where Scheherazade tells stories to her husband, the Sultan Shahryar, to save her life. Each night, she stops her story at a cliffhanger, compelling the Sultan to let her live another day to hear the conclusion.
