Keramiikkavärit

Keramiikkavärit, or ceramic colors, are pigments designed for application to ceramic surfaces. These colors are formulated to withstand the high temperatures and chemical changes that occur during the ceramic firing process. They are typically composed of metal oxides mixed with a fluxing agent, such as feldspar or borax, and a binder. The flux helps the color fuse with the ceramic glaze or body at high temperatures, creating a durable and vibrant decoration.

There are several types of ceramic colors, categorized by their application method and firing temperature. Underglaze colors are applied to the unfired clay body or biscuit-fired piece before the glaze is applied. They tend to be more muted and subtle in appearance after firing. Overglaze colors, also known as on-glaze or enamel colors, are applied to a previously fired glaze. These colors typically require a lower firing temperature than the initial glaze firing, allowing for a wider range of bright colors. They can be applied as fine lines, delicate details, or even in multi-color patterns.

Another category is the ceramic stain, which is a mixture of metal oxides that is fired into the ceramic body or glaze, becoming an integral part of the material itself. These stains offer excellent color stability and durability. The choice of ceramic color depends on the desired aesthetic, the type of ceramic ware, and the firing capabilities available. Proper application techniques and understanding of firing temperatures are crucial for achieving successful and lasting ceramic decoration.
