Keramat

Keramat is a term used in Malay and Indonesian to refer to a sacred or miraculous power attributed to a person, place, or object. The sense conveyed is that such things carry a special blessing, protection, or grace beyond the ordinary.

Etymology and scope: The word derives from the Arabic karama or karāmah, meaning a sign or wonder granted by God to holy people. In Southeast Asia, the concept has been integrated into local religious and folk beliefs, spanning Islamic and pre-Islamic elements. Keramat can describe miracles associated with saints or revered figures, as well as the perceived sacredness of sites and objects.

Sites and practices: Places described as keramat often include the tombs or shrines of respected religious figures, graves, sacred trees, springs, or stones. People may visit these sites to seek blessings, healing, protection, or solutions to problems, frequently through prayers, offerings, or vows. Keramat objects or talismans are also believed to carry protective or healing properties.

People and objects: The term can also apply to individuals regarded as having special spiritual grace or prowess, and to items believed to be endowed with protective powers. In everyday language, keramat may describe a particularly sacred moment, place, or object.

Contemporary views: Attitudes toward keramat vary.
