Kenttäemitoinnin, also known as field emission, is a quantum mechanical phenomenon where electrons are released from a solid surface by a strong electric field. This process occurs when the electric field is intense enough to deform the potential barrier at the surface of the material, allowing electrons to tunnel through it. Unlike thermionic emission, which relies on heating the material to release electrons, field emission is driven solely by an external electric field.

The rate of field emission is highly dependent on the strength of the applied electric field and the work function of the material. Materials with a low work function, meaning less energy is required to remove an electron, are more prone to field emission. The surface morphology of the material also plays a crucial role; sharp points or edges on the surface can concentrate the electric field, significantly enhancing the emission current.

Field emission has various practical applications. It is fundamental to the operation of field emission displays (FEDs), which utilize arrays of micro-tips to generate electrons that excite phosphors, creating images. Vacuum fluorescent displays (VFDs) also employ a form of field emission. Furthermore, field emission is utilized in electron microscopy, particle accelerators, and in some types of vacuum electronic devices.
