Kenttäväyläjärjestelmä, commonly known as a fieldbus system, is a digital communication network designed for industrial automation. It is used to connect sensors, actuators, and control devices in a distributed manner. Unlike traditional point-to-point wiring, a fieldbus system uses a single bus cable to transmit data between multiple devices, significantly reducing wiring complexity and cost. This allows for more efficient data exchange and diagnostics within an industrial plant.

The architecture of a fieldbus system typically involves a master device (often a programmable logic controller or PLC) that initiates communication and slave devices (sensors, actuators) that respond to requests from the master. Data is transmitted in packets containing information about device status, measurements, or commands.
