Kenttäfunktion

Kenttäfunktion, a Finnish term meaning a function that describes a physical field, is a concept primarily used in physics and engineering. It represents the distribution of a quantity, such as temperature, pressure, electric potential, or magnetic field, over space and time. A kenttäfunktion is typically denoted with a Greek letter or a function name, and it maps coordinates or a set of parameters to values of the field at those points. The mathematical representation often takes the form of a scalar, vector, or tensor field, depending on the nature of the physical quantity being modeled.

In electrostatics, for example, the electric potential V is a kenttäfunktion that satisfies Laplace’s equation ∇²V = 0 in charge‑free regions. Similarly, in fluid dynamics the velocity field u(x, t) is a kenttäfunktion that obeys the Navier–Stokes equations.
