Keményítéssel

Keményítéssel, often translated as "starch treatment" or "starch finishing," is a laundry technique that involves applying a starch solution to fabrics before ironing. This process stiffens the fibers of the material, giving it a crisper feel and a more defined shape. Historically, keményítéssel was a common practice for cotton and linen garments, particularly collars, cuffs, and tablecloths, to achieve a neat and formal appearance.

The starch solution can be prepared from natural starches like cornstarch or potato starch, or purchased as a commercial spray. When applied, the starch coats the fabric fibers. As the fabric dries and is then ironed, the starch solidifies, creating a more rigid structure. This results in sharper creases, prevents drooping, and can make fabrics appear brighter by reflecting more light.

Modern laundry practices have seen a decline in the widespread use of keményítéssel, partly due to the availability of synthetic fabrics that hold their shape well and the introduction of modern ironing techniques and appliances. However, it remains a popular method for those who prefer a very crisp finish, particularly for vintage clothing, formal wear, or specific craft projects. It can also help to temporarily mend minor fabric wear by filling in spaces between weakened fibers. The degree of stiffness can be controlled by the concentration of the starch solution and the amount applied.
