Katsuras

Katsuras are a type of tree belonging to the genus Cercidiphyllum. They are deciduous trees native to East Asia, primarily found in China and Japan. The genus name, Cercidiphyllum, is derived from the Greek words "karkinos" meaning crab, and "phyllon" meaning leaf, referring to the resemblance of their leaves to those of the redbud tree.

Katsuras are known for their attractive, heart-shaped leaves that emerge a reddish-bronze in spring, turning to a vibrant green in summer and a brilliant yellow to orange-red in autumn. This fall color display is a significant ornamental feature of these trees. They typically grow to moderate sizes, often reaching heights of 40 to 60 feet with a similar spread, forming a pyramidal or rounded crown.

The bark of mature katsuras is usually furrowed and grayish-brown. The flowers are inconspicuous and are borne in small clusters. Katsuras are dioecious, meaning individual trees are either male or female. They are often planted as specimen trees in parks and gardens for their ornamental appeal, particularly their striking autumn foliage. They prefer moist, well-drained soil and partial to full sun. Common species include Cercidiphyllum japonicum and Cercidiphyllum magnificum.
