Katkosuodatin, often translated as circuit breaker, is an electrical safety device designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by overcurrent or short circuit. It automatically interrupts the flow of electricity when it detects an anomaly, thereby preventing potential hazards such as fires. Unlike a fuse, which is a single-use device that must be replaced after it trips, a circuit breaker can be reset and reused.

The core components of a typical circuit breaker include a bimetallic strip or an electromagnet, a tripping mechanism, and contacts. When an overcurrent occurs, the bimetallic strip heats up and bends, or the electromagnet generates a strong magnetic field. This action triggers a spring-loaded mechanism that forces the contacts apart, opening the circuit and stopping the flow of current. Short circuits, which involve a very high current flow, typically activate the magnetic tripping mechanism more rapidly.

Circuit breakers are essential in virtually all modern electrical systems, from residential homes to industrial facilities.
