Cation exchangers are used to remove positively charged ions, such as calcium, magnesium, and sodium, from water. They work by attracting these ions and releasing hydrogen ions (H+) or other positively charged ions in the process. Cation exchangers are commonly used in water softening, demineralization, and the production of ultrapure water.

Anion exchangers, on the other hand, are used to remove negatively charged ions, such as chloride, sulfate, and nitrate, from water. They work by attracting these ions and releasing hydroxide ions (OH-) or other negatively charged ions in the process. Anion exchangers are commonly used in water treatment, wastewater treatment, and the production of ultrapure water.

Ion exchange resins are regenerated by washing them with a solution containing the ions they have exchanged. This process restores the resin's ion exchange capacity and allows it to be reused. The choice of regenerant depends on the type of resin and the ions being removed.

Kationinvaihtajat are widely used in various industries, including water treatment, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and electronics. They offer several advantages, such as high selectivity, efficiency, and the ability to operate at high flow rates. However, they also have some limitations, such as the need for regeneration and the potential for fouling and scaling.
