Kationcserél is a Hungarian term that translates to "cation exchange" in English. It refers to a fundamental chemical process where ions, specifically cations, are reversibly exchanged between two phases. Typically, this involves an insoluble solid material, such as an ion-exchange resin or zeolite, and a liquid solution. In this process, cations present in the liquid phase are attracted to the solid material and displace other cations that were already bound to the solid's surface.

The principle of cation exchange is widely applied in various fields. In water treatment, it is used to soften hard water by removing calcium and magnesium ions, replacing them with sodium ions. This prevents scale buildup in pipes and appliances. Ion-exchange resins are also employed in the purification of chemicals, the separation of isotopes, and in analytical chemistry techniques. The capacity of a material to undergo cation exchange is a crucial property, indicating how many cations it can hold and exchange. The process is driven by differences in the affinity of the cations for the exchange sites on the solid material, often influenced by factors like charge density and hydration.
