Kategorizoj

Kategorizoj is a term in Esperanto that refers to the act or result of organizing items into categories. The word can denote the process of classification as well as the set of categories produced by that process. It is used in fields such as information science, library science, knowledge management, and data organization to support search, navigation, and retrieval.

In practice, categorization involves assigning items to one or more categories according to defined criteria. Categories (kategorioj) are the individual classes into which items are placed. Kategorizoj may describe either the activity of performing this assignment or the aggregate of categories created for a given domain.

Approaches to kategorizoj vary. Hierarchical categorization arranges categories in a tree, while polyhierarchical schemes allow items to belong to several categories. Faceted classification uses multiple independent axes to describe an item. Methods range from manual categorization by experts to rule-based and automatic classification using machine learning, and from crowd-sourced tagging to automated metadata generation.

Quality and consistency are common concerns. Ambiguity in criteria, evolving domains, and multilingual or multi-domain data can challenge stable categorization. Good practice includes defining clear criteria, using controlled vocabularies or ontologies, maintaining stable identifiers, and documenting the reasoning behind category assignments.
