Katalytförstörelse, or catalytic decomposition, refers to the process where a catalyst is used to break down a substance into simpler components. In many chemical reactions, a catalyst can facilitate a reaction by lowering the activation energy required, but in catalytic decomposition, the catalyst's primary role is to initiate and accelerate the breakdown of a target molecule. This is distinct from a catalytic converter's broader function, which can involve both breaking down harmful compounds and forming less harmful ones.

A common example of catalytic decomposition is the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide. In the presence of a catalyst like manganese dioxide or even catalase, an enzyme found in living organisms, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) decomposes into water (H2O) and oxygen gas (O2). The catalyst itself is not consumed in the reaction and can be reused. This process is often demonstrated in science classes due to its visible production of gas.

Another application can be found in industrial processes where unwanted or unstable compounds need to be safely broken down. For instance, certain plastics or waste materials can be subjected to catalytic decomposition to convert them into less complex molecules, potentially for recycling or disposal.
