Kasutamistähtajale refers to the expiration date of a product, commonly found on food items, medications, and cosmetics. It indicates the period during which the product is expected to remain safe and effective for use when stored under recommended conditions. After this date, the product's quality, efficacy, or safety may be compromised.

For food products, the kasutamistähtajale often signifies the date until which the manufacturer guarantees the product's optimal quality, such as taste and texture. While some foods may still be safe to consume after this date, their sensory attributes might have deteriorated. It is important to distinguish between "kuni" (until) and "parim enne" (best before) dates. "Kuni" dates are safety-related, and consuming food past this point can pose health risks. "Parim enne" dates are quality-related.

In the case of medications, the kasutamistähtajale is crucial for ensuring both safety and efficacy. Expired medications may lose their potency, leading to ineffective treatment, or they might degrade into harmful substances. Therefore, it is strongly advised not to use medications past their expiration date.
